Mykonos, Greece.
In the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean lies one of the most inviting places in all of Greece - Mykonos. Its countless bays and beaches and its quaint cobblestone streets are bound to welcome any visitor. Mykonos is famous for its sand and sea. Get lost looking out at the endless waters of the Aegean Sea as you grab a little sun on one of its beautiful beaches. Visit the birthplace of Apollo on the historic island of Delos. Dating back to the third millennium B.C., Delos is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world. Marvel at the ancient ruins from famed architectural sights. Visit the Archaeological Museum on Mykonos, featuring important finds from the ruins on neighboring Delos. Spend an enchanting afternoon exploring the charming cobblestone streets and two-story, whitewashed shops and homes of these beautiful islands.
Katakalon, Greece.
Whether you're into sports, history, art, or just lounging by the sea, the charming village of Katakolon, Greece, is a good place to start. From here it's just a quick trip to famed Olympia, birthplace of the modern Olympics and one-time home to a Wonder of the Ancient World. Or, if you're looking to do like the locals do - grab a seat at one of the town's seaside cafés and order a cool drink and some baklava (a cinnamon-sweet dessert). A short drive north of Katakolon you'll find the city of Olympia - where the Ancient Greeks honored the god Zeus with athletic contests called the Olympics. Today you'll find the remarkable ruins of many significant buildings, including the gymnasium, the guesthouse, a workshop and the stadium itself. While in Olympia, explore the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, which once held one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - a magnificent 40-foot gold and ivory statue of Zeus. Back in Katakolon, be sure to visit the local galleries and shops on the main street for traditional Greek crafts and works by local artists. Kick back and relax under the umbrellas or awnings of the local cafés. You'll find fresh seafood and local favorites on the menus - and everything tastes better with a beautiful view of the deep blue Mediterranean.
Corfu, Greece.
Known as the Emerald Island because of its lush greenery and breathtaking beauty, Corfu is one of the hidden treasures of the Mediterranean. The second largest of the seven Ionian Islands, Corfu is just 593 square kilometers (368.253 square miles). Possessing an intense culture and unparalleled coastline, the island has provided endless inspiration for many artists and literary figures. Don't miss this opportunity to tour the Achilleion Palace, built by the Empress Elizabeth of Austria in 1891. View her breathtaking gardens as well as a spectacular panoramic view of the Ionian Sea. The Achilleion Palace also houses the Terrace of the Muses, which was built as a tribute to the nine muses of Greek mythology. Hike to the top of Mount Pantokrator where you'll get a perfect view of Corfu's lush greenery and memorable views firsthand.
Split Greece.
Split is one of the Adriatic's most amazing seaports and Croatia's second-largest city. Not only does this 1700-year-old harbor have its share of historic monuments, museums and galleries but from here you can visit dreamy Adriatic islands, sporting some of the world's best beaches. Diocletian's Palace is one of the best-preserved Roman royal residences on the planet. Built on the seacoast of Split around 295 AD, the structure is more like a city housing sixteen towers, three temples and an emperor's mausoleum. Tour the Archaeological Museum. Its Croatia's oldest, with a large collection of objects dating back to prehistoric times. Go gallery hopping. Mestrovic's Gallery exhibits the largest collection of the artist's works, including sculptures, oil paintings and drawings. Take in the amazing Adriatic view from the top of Mount Marjan. Hit Marmontova Ulica (street) for the latest fashions. Shop for jewelry and brand name clothing, and yes, shoes! There are plenty of cafés in the mix in case you get hungry.
